A History of Noosa
The shire of Noosa was founded in 1910, after long used as a solution powered by timber logging began to grow into a township after a port was established in Tewantin, just north of Noosa. Noosa town was originally a fishing village, with an initial population of about 2000 but it was not until the mid-20th century that it began to be recognized for its natural beauty, which subsequently developed into a popular tourist destination.
Prior to European settlement was the Noosa region, home to several Aboriginal enclaves of the dominant tribes, including Undumbi tribe in the south, to Dulingbara the north, and Gabbi Gabbi to the West. To this day, the Noosa still remnants of an old strong cultural presence, with labeling, rock carvings and burial sites spread across protected areas. Noosa origin of the name is derived from the local Aboriginal word Noothera (or Gnuthuru the Kabi Kabi language), the ubiquitous translation means shadow or shady places.
